R.F.I.D. is the latest technology available to several industries as a tool to use; as a source of manufacturing process information, as an identification system, as a method to prevent fraud, in gathering marketing statistics, to control inventory, in tracking credit and debit sales, and much more.

Currently, Western Switches is collaborating with Precision Dynamics Corporation a manufacturer of wrist bands that are used as entry tickets in the entertainment and amusement park industries and medical ID bracelets. There are two inventory control projects that Western Switches is presently involved with, one is working with an equipment rental corporation for tracking their rental products and more importantly for identifying lost products when they are found. A serial number can be erased or altered thereby making identification impossible, but an embedded chip whose location is unknown to the thieves cannot be altered. A hand-held scanner can then be used to identify the R.F.I.D. computer chip on the rental unit and prove ownership.

The second inventory control project is at a large manufacturer of tiles. Currently, tiles are stacked and stored on pallets in open yards with a bar code label. When a partial number of tiles are taken from the pallet, there is no way to change the barcode to the new count and adjust the inventory on the computer instantly. The proposed use of R.F.I.D. computer chips on the pallets will enable the user to reprogram it with the new count via a hand-held read/write unit and the new information is also remotely sent to the computer instantly.

Advantages of using R.F.I.D.:

• Original computer chip can be reprogrammed, as often as needed unlike Bar Code labels that need to be reprinted and attached at time that data information needs updating.

• Instantaneous computer update whenever data is changed.

• Computer chip can be embedded in a product and can still be read and reprogrammed.

• Each computer chip has a permanent individual serial number that cannot be altered and is traceable, with multiple tags read capability.

• More information can be programmed in the computer ship which can supply more feedback that can be useful for marketing purposes, point of sale reports, manufacturing processes reports, progress reports, etc.

A few application examples where Western Switches has provided an R.F.I.D. package:

• Ernie Ball Corporation for their guitar buffing process. Information on the embedded chip gives automated manufacturing process instructions.

• Advanced Equipment Corporation for large door/partition management systems. Data on the chip gave precise sequential order of opening and closing large doors/partitions used in convention centers.

• Edwards Life Sciences for a Food and Drug Administration approved product identification and tracking device. Data on the chip provided information about the product.

• RFID systems can be used to track people. Prisons, theme parks, medical and educational institutions, Security access are just a few examples.

• Keeping track of inventory or sensitive documents can easily be accomplished with a RFID system.

• Work in progress, package tracking, conveyor sorting can be easily accomplished regardless of package size or position.
